It is made for spending a whole day on your feet without thinking about them. In Black everything shares one colour: the rubber reinforcement guarding the toe is as black as the leather, so the shoe reads as a single piece and the bulk of the sole looks lighter than it is. Black Roma leather never goes flat; the oiled finish leaves a low sheen that lifts where the shoe rubs and dulls in the creases across the instep. The laces are black too, running through eyelets low down and dark metal hooks up top. It is the quietest colour in the range and the one that shows a wet day least.
Who is MONTREAL 1629 in Black for?
For anyone who dresses in black by default and wants their shoes to fall in line without argument. It works with a long coat, a heavy scarf, a rain jacket and whatever is underneath. It suits long shifts: hours standing, trips outside, underground stairs, the walk home at night. Sizes 36 to 46.
Move Me
Set it on the floor and push the toe down with your hand: the sole gives with almost no resistance. That is the Move Me system, deep grooves cut exactly along the line where the foot bends, so when you lift your heel the shoe follows the movement instead of fighting it. With the SoftLight sole, one of the lightest in the catalogue, you notice it most in the twelfth hour of the day. The foot repeats the same movement thousands of times; the less each one costs, the less it adds up.
Materials and construction
Underneath, a 3 cm SoftLight sole in black, flat from heel to toe, with wide lugs that bite on wet ground. It joins the upper with a 360º stitch that runs the full perimeter, visible as a continuous thread above the edge. Above that, oiled Roma leather with a dense hand, slow to take on water, which marks the instep crease within a few weeks. The lining is 3D textile PL, open in structure so air moves inside over a winter sock, and the interior is chrome-free tanned. The insole is removable.
Size guide
Comfort last, wide across the forefoot and held at the heel; your usual size is the right one, available from 36 to 46. Roma leather gives very little in width, so the real margin comes from the lacing: eyelets below for the instep, hooks above for the ankle. With a mid-calf winter sock there is still room; with a thin sock, pull the hooks one notch tighter.
