Made for long days and wet ground. Here "cuero" is the name of the colour, not the material: a toasted caramel on nylon that turns honeyed in low afternoon light and lifts towards tobacco under strip lighting. Below it, the black rubber bumper wraps the toe and runs the full perimeter, and that horizontal line between caramel and black is the first thing you see. The laces follow the tone of the upper, not the bumper. Of all the nylons in the series, this is the one furthest from the city-grey register.
Who is BIRMINGHAM 1895 in Cuero - Black for?
For anyone in and out of places all day who never gets home to change. It works with cotton cargos, a flannel shirt and a short rain jacket, and holds up just as well with a roll neck and a scarf. The caramel asks for little company: a belt in the same tone and it's settled. Sizes 36 to 46, so the same boot suits very different feet.
Design and stride
High-shafted ankle boot, nine pairs of eyelets and adjustable laces right to the top. The foot sits 3.5 cm up in one block, all sole volume and no drop between heel and forefoot: weight spreads evenly front and back, and on a descent the foot doesn't slide towards the toe. The lugs are deep and well spaced, which is what tells on wet concrete and metal stairs. Over the months the rubber polishes where the heel strikes and the rest of the tread keeps working.
Materials and construction
The sole is Softlight, a light, flexible compound — the reason this volume weighs less than it looks. It's joined to the upper with 360º stitching, visible above the rubber bumper. The upper is nylon: it doesn't soak up water the way leather does, it dries fast and marks come off with a damp cloth. Inside, a 3D Textil PL lining, a three-dimensional textile that lets air move and keeps the foot from sticking to the fabric. The insole is removable and the interior is chrome-free tanned.
Size guide
Comfort last, generous across the forefoot, with the shaft closing over nine pairs of eyelets. Nylon doesn't stretch with wear: the size you buy is the size you'll have in March, so with a normal winter sock, take your usual number. The insole lifts out whole if you'd rather use your own.
